What you need to know: OpenAI's Advanced Voice mode for ChatGPT is launching for Plus and Teams subscribers, but it's unavailable in the EU, UK, and several European countries.
The finer details:
Advanced Voice mode allows natural conversation with ChatGPT using a smartphone.
It uses GPT-4 for faster responses and can interpret text, vision, and audio inputs.
The feature includes five new voices and improved conversational capabilities.
It's only available to ChatGPT Plus and Teams subscribers.
The unavailability in Europe may be due to the EU AI Act, which restricts AI systems that can recognise emotions from a person's voice.
So what? The EU AI Act legislation could potentially make ChatGPT's Advanced Voice mode illegal in EU workplaces and schools, keeping European countries behind in AI advancements. This situation highlights the tension between rapid AI development and regulatory efforts to protect privacy and emotional autonomy and would require OpenAI to seek exceptions or modify the feature for European markets.

What you need to know: OpenAI is transitioning from a nonprofit-governed entity to a for-profit benefit corporation, with CEO Sam Altman gaining significant equity and control.
The finer details:
OpenAI was originally established as a nonprofit in 2015, with a mission to develop AI safely and beneficially.
The company introduced a for-profit subsidiary in 2019 to raise capital while maintaining its nonprofit mission. OpenAI is now seeking $6.5 billion in new investments, aiming for a $150 billion valuation.
The proposed changes would remove the nonprofit board's oversight and the cap on investors' returns.
Several high-ranking officials, including Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati, have recently announced they are leaving the company just before the news broke.
So what? The for-profit model could attract more capital, potentially accelerating AI development. But the change raises questions about who will ensure OpenAI's commitment to beneficial AI development and could challenge OpenAI's initial commitment to prioritising humanity's benefit over financial returns. AI safety advocates are urgently calling for regulation of major AI companies, emphasising the need for oversight.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is launching the AI Airlock regulatory sandbox, inviting manufacturers and developers of AI-powered medical devices to participate. This initiative aims to identify and address regulatory challenges for AI medical devices, facilitating their integration into the NHS. The project, open for applications until October 7th, will inform future AI guidance and contribute to the development of a MedTech framework focused on patient safety, access, and innovation.
Meta has faced backlash for using user data from platforms like Instagram to train its AI without explicit consent, prompting privacy concerns globally. Over 300,000 users have expressed their disapproval through social media, although simple posts do not effectively prevent data usage. The company recently introduced a new privacy setting that allows users to request restrictions on their data's use for AI training, but finding and utilising this option remains challenging.
A recent study by CybSafe and the National Cybersecurity Alliance found that 38% of employees share sensitive work information with AI tools without their employer's consent, particularly among younger generations like Gen Z (46%) and millennials (43%). The research also revealed a lack of training on safe AI usage, with 52% of employed participants reporting no such training. Concerns about AI-related cybercrime and trust in organisations' AI implementations are prevalent, with two-thirds of respondents worried about the risks posed by AI to cybersecurity and governance.
AI-edited photos and videos can distort human memories, with study participants recalling altered versions of images as reality. Researchers found that even subtle AI modifications to images can significantly impact memory accuracy, raising concerns about potential memory manipulation. This study highlights the need for caution as AI editing becomes more prevalent, especially if it becomes an automatic feature in smartphones and other devices.
Meta has announced that its AI chatbot will feature celebrity voices, including Dame Judi Dench and John Cena, aiming to enhance user interaction. This new initiative follows a previous unsuccessful attempt with celebrity chatbots and is part of broader AI advancements showcased at the Meta Connect conference. Additionally, Meta's AI will offer image recognition and editing capabilities, while the company continues to invest heavily in AI and augmented reality technologies.

Picking up from one of the featured new stories this week, about how even subtle AI modifications to photos and videos can distort our memories, we’ve gone with a manipulation of the well-known and recognised ‘The Scream’ painting by Edvard Munch.
The prompt we used to generate this image in Bing Image Creator:
“Edvard Munch's The Scream painting realistic, but put a dog on the boardwalk near the people at the back as dark also.”
