What you need to know: Google has launched the London AI Campus, a ground-breaking initiative to equip the next generation with essential digital skills for an AI-driven future. The campus, located in Somers Town, Camden, offers a two-year educational pilot program for local sixth-form students, providing access to cutting-edge AI and machine learning resources, mentoring, and real-world projects.
The AI Campus aims to inspire, inform, and educate students in AI, with a focus on diversity and inclusion. Google has also invested £865,000 in the Raspberry Pi Foundation's Experience AI program to expand AI literacy across the UK.
The finer details:
Developed in partnership with Camden Council and Camden Learning
An initial cohort of 32 students, prioritising underrepresented groups
Offers mentoring from Google, Google DeepMind, and industry experts
Connects AI to diverse fields like health, social sciences, and arts
Plans to expand to the broader Camden student body from mid-2025
Aims to reach an additional 250,000 students by 2026 through the Experience AI program
So what? This initiative demonstrates Google's commitment to democratising AI education and fostering innovation in the UK. By equipping students with AI skills, Google aims to boost the UK's global competitiveness and drive scientific breakthroughs that have the potential to change lives.
AI TRANSPARENCY

What you need to know: The UK government's adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in various departments is progressing, but transparency and accountability issues are raising concerns. While AI has the potential to revolutionise public services and boost productivity, the lack of clear oversight and disclosure about its use is troubling.
The government has mandated that all departments register their AI systems, but compliance has been poor. Only nine algorithmic systems have been submitted to the public register, despite widespread AI use across the central UK government (Whitehall). This lack of transparency has led to warnings that the public sector is "flying blind" in its AI deployment.
The finer details:
AI is being used in benefit payments, immigration enforcement, and policing.
A £20m facial recognition software contract was recently offered by a police procurement body.
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is deploying basic AI tools in jobcentres, allowing work coaches to ask questions about universal credit guidance and is using AI to process documents and detect fraud.
NHS England has a £330m contract with Palantir for a new data platform (which we focused on in a previous newsletter).
AI chatbots are being trialled on gov.uk and for use by civil servants.
So what? The lack of transparency in AI use raises concerns about public trust, data rights, and potential harms. Without proper oversight, there's a risk of discriminatory or ineffective outcomes. The government needs to balance the potential benefits of AI with the need for accountability and public scrutiny to ensure AI serves the public interest effectively and ethically.

AI HIGHLIGHTS
A group of artists testing OpenAI's Sora video generator briefly leaked the model in protest, claiming they were being used for "art washing" rather than genuine creative collaboration. The leak provided rare access to the highly restricted AI tool, which has been limited to professional filmmakers. The artists argue that OpenAI's approach to the early access program appears more focused on PR and advertisement than supporting artistic expression.
Researchers from Stanford and Google DeepMind have developed an AI model capable of replicating an individual's personality with 85% accuracy after just a two-hour interview. By conducting comprehensive interviews and training generative AI models, scientists can now create "simulation agents" that can predict personality traits and replicate human responses across various social and experimental contexts.
Alibaba has launched QwQ-32B-Preview, a new reasoning AI model designed to compete with OpenAI's o1, featuring 32.5 billion parameters and the ability to process prompts up to 32,000 words long. This model outperforms OpenAI's o1 models on certain benchmarks, including the AIME and MATH tests, but it has limitations such as unexpected language switches and challenges with common sense reasoning. Available for download under a permissive license, QwQ-32B-Preview is subject to Chinese regulatory oversight, influencing its responses on sensitive topics.
Spines, a new AI-powered publishing platform, plans to publish 8,000 books in 2025 by charging authors between £954 and £3,975 (USD $1,200 and $5,000) for AI-assisted publishing services, sparking widespread criticism from writers and publishers who argue the platform prioritises quantity over quality. Despite the backlash, Spines maintains that it is "levelling the playing field" for aspiring authors by offering a fast, affordable alternative to traditional publishing routes.
